Our Favorite Local Music

We really enjoy the local music scene.  Some of the great places to hear music are Gnat’s Landing, King and Prince Hotel, Palm Coast, Mullet Bay, and Mellow Mushroom.  It’s amazing to have such great talent right here on the island and we have a great time listening and dancing to music from the 50s to today!  Here are a few of our favorite bands:

Backbeat Boulevard

BackBeat Boulevard’s unique blend of “Groovin’ Rock/Blues/Soul/R&B/Funk Classics” have made this popular band a Georgia/Florida coastal favorite who have been entertaining Golden Isles audiences for over 7 years!  Comprised of seasoned touring musicians and local mainstays, this group has garnered a loyal following (including us), becoming one of the hottest tickets in the area!

The members of BackBeat Boulevard have all shared stages with national recording acts as diverse as The Marshall Tucker BandThe TamsThe DriftersJason AldeanConfederate RailroadLittle Big TownThe PlattersBlue Oyster Cult and more.

From classics by artists as diverse as The Doobie BrothersSantanaEric ClaptonB.B KingBill WithersDelbert McClintonSteely Dan, Billy PrestonOtis ReddingBlues BrothersARSPaul SimonTower of PowerCCRStevie Ray VaughnAllman BrothersMarshall TuckerSly & the Family Stone and more – to their own brand of groove laced originals – an evening with BackBeat Boulevard is an experience you don’t want to miss!

Also, check out The Mufflers!  They are a musical project started a few years back with Keith Dean and Joey Thigpen as an attempt to find those special songs that cause us all to stir a little…. and also give them an opportunity to develop and perform their original material as well.  “We’re gonna try with a little help from our friends…. See you soon!”

Backbeat Boulevard and the Mufflers are truly our favorite bands on the island and are also wonderfully sweet people!  Check out their website backbeatboulevard.com or Live Music SSI  for their next venue.

Owen Plant

Based on Saint Simons Island, GA, Jamaican-Born, Singer-Songwriter Owen Plant’s style is reminiscent of introspective artists from the ’70s, old-time reggae groups and contemporary acoustic artists.  Owen writes folk and reggae influenced songs and does unique covers which he performs all over the country at listening rooms, festivals as well as various artist residencies, the main one being at Sea Island Resort in Georgia.

His unique sound is drawn from diverse influences, the most obvious of which being music from the ’70s.  His finger-picking style is folkie/Americana-like while his strumming sometimes employs muting and downward strumming techniques taken from reggae music. Creative kindred spirits of today include Amos Lee, Ray LaMontagne, Jason Mraz, Xavier Rudd, Jack Johnson, Martin Sexton, Ben Harper, Michael Kiwanuka and Ziggy Marley – all singer/songwriters who have come up with distinctive sounds within the framework of clear inspirations and traditions.

Jamie Renee & The Walkers

Jamie Renee Walker created something special in the Spring of 2015, a band now known as Jamie Renee & The Walkers.  This eclectic quartet is based in Georgia’s Golden Isles, and covers/blends many genres of music, including country, folk, pop, classic rock, R&B/soul, funk, and jazz.  In 2016, Jamie Renee & The Walkers entered the regional festival circuit, performing at the Swamptown Getdown Music & Arts Festival in Waycross, GA, as well as the Jekyll Island Shrimp & Grits Festival.  The band’s unique sound was described in Golden Isles Magazine’s March & April (2016) edition as “jazz-infused, folky pop.”

The real treat is Jamie Renee’s original music.  This ukulele-strumming songwriter delivers soulful, honest songs about her Georgian roots, living and traveling across the world, love, life, and of course, “that road.”  An album is in the works; 10 songs that will soothe you, groove you, and maybe even pluck your heartstrings.

Suzi and the Bird Dogs

Since their first show at Palm Coast a year and a half ago, local alt-country/rock ’n’ roll band Suzy and the Bird Dogs have carved out a niche in the Golden Isles.  With touches of the Allman Brothers, Black Crowes, Wilco, and Van Morrison their range of danceable, feel-good covers and light-hearted originals make them a crowd pleaser every time.
